GUADALAJARA
This travel concertina sketch book dates to March-April 2023 when I visited my mother in hospital, in Guadalajara, Mexico. I consider Guadalajara to be my city of origin, and although I was born in Mexico City, Guadalajara was my home during my upbringing. I still love this beautiful city, a modern city as it is only 450 years old, although much of its origins are Spanish colonial, the city has a deep connection with its pre-European past. In particular, the various surrounding villages in the nearby region of the Chapala lake. The largest fresh-water lake in Mexico. A particular interesting town is an abandoned fortress know as Mezcala, it sits on a small island in the middle of the lake. According to historical records Mezcala was the last bastion of defence from Spanish invasion, which began in 1521 with the conquest of Tenochtitlan, now Mexico City.
On one side of the Guadalajara Concertina book shows civic buildings found in the old city centre of Guadalajara and the second side, shows a number of suburban houses built with adobe and passive design principles to maximise the opportunities that the local climate and vegetation can bring.
Enjoy my city!
