STRATI SFUMATI
Gradient layers from the hill sides to water fronts is a piece of work inspired in Vietnam, a country I have visited twice (2008, 2010) while working with Architects Without Frontiers on the design and construction of a primary school for kids with special needs.
Sfumato is a painting technique of allowing tones and colours to shade gradually into one another, producing softened outlines or hazy forms. Perhaps our cities and landscapes could benefit from applying the same technique in the way we compose our cities, perhaps they could do with a splash of colour and in some cases with fading away unnecessary ugliness (Robyn Boyd comes to mind).
