TRAM ROUTE 96, ST KILDA
Concertina sketchbooks provide a unique way to tell a story. I am getting to enjoy the possibilities that comes with unfolding a long paper accordion of what is essentially a long strip of thick cotton paper (320 gsm). When fully folded is only 130mm x 190mm but when open is 1000mm x 190mm. Yes, that is 1 full meter long in which depicting a lineal process, scenes or trajectory is possible.
Tram Route 96 piece depicts my commuting journey. Sometimes I cycle into work but with the change into the colder season I prefer to hop onto the tram and read a book during my 40 minute journey into the city. Here I show some of my favourite places or landmarks. I also look at various cafes, bars and open spaces such as the St Kilda Pier and Esplanade along the way. Some historical landmarks along Spencer and Bourke Streets in Melbourne. The rail track defines the trajectory to the upper part is one side of the street and to lower part, the other side of the street. It mirrors creating the upside-down effect forcing the viewer to rotate the sketchbook to be able to read and see it correctly...and wen crossing the tram track need to be rotated again.
Tram 96 goes all the way to North Brunswick. My communing trajectory only goes into Melbourne's City Business District (CBD), now City of Melbourne... not any longer a district strictly for business matters but its full of daily life, much of it brought by local residents and university students!
What do you think the future holds for the City Melbourne? Tram 96 is great, will our tram system survive by 2033?
